Still trying to figure out what to do with that old phone? We have some suggestions for iPhone and Android alike. Under 'How you sign in to Google,' click 2-Step Verification. Print and/or save these backup codes in a safe place. You’ll then be displayed with a set of backup codes. Simply scan the QR code on the desired app to register your Evernote account on it and use it as a 2-step verification method. Now that you've transferred Google Authenticator to your new phone, take some time to learn all of the iPhone's hidden features or master Android's hidden features. The process is usually the same as Google Authenticator. Don't delete the Authenticator app off your old phone until you've moved all accounts to your new phone, otherwise you'll be locked out of those accounts - and nobody wants that. Repeat this process for each service you currently use with Google Authenticator, be it Apple, Facebook, Dropbox or Amazon. Once that's done, the codes on your old device will no longer be valid. During the setup, choose the option to Scan a barcode or Enter a provided key. To get the backup codes, go to your Personal Settings and look under Second-factor Auth settings. It effectively functions as a backup 2nd factor. If your 2nd factor device gets stolen or is not working, you will be able to use one of these codes to unlock your account.
If you have these backup codes, you can use one to sign in. You should always generate backup codes for 2FA. Open the Google Authenticator app and follow the setup process. Here are some of the workarounds for logging into your accounts without Google Authenticator: Backup codes: Many services provide one-time backup codes for emergency sign-ins, in case you lose the device linked to the 2FA protocol. Scan the QR code displayed on Google's website with the Authenticator app, then enter the six-digit code to verify everything is working properly. On your new phone, install the Google Authenticator app from the App Store or Play Store. At the bottom, tap Import existing accounts On your old phone, create a QR code: In the Authenticator app, tap More Transfer accounts Export accounts. In the Google Authenticator app, tap Get Started. Google will then revert to delivering your 2FA codes via SMS.Ĥ. Open the Authenticator app on your new phone and tap Begin > Scan barcode. On your new phone, install the Google Authenticator app.
If you want to disable Google Authenticator altogether, click on the trash can icon and confirm your decision. Remember to keep your mobile device secure and ensure you have a reliable backup method in case you lose access to the Google Authenticator app, such as backup codes or an alternate 2FA method. Select the type of phone you'll be using and follow the prompts. Click Change Phone in the Authenticator app section. Make sure you have both your old and new phone nearby when moving Google Authenticator.
